Cabochons were among the first ways that gems were set in the crowns, sceptres, and jewelry of ancient royalty, so using gem cabochons makes you part of a great tradition. These cabs are wonderfully affordable because they have been created in a lab. Chemically, they are real corundum, spinel, or manufactured cubic zirconia, but they are much clearer and tougher than many of their mined namesakes, and they have the added advantage of being heat-resistant.
