Other Petrified Woods

Actually, all the fossils on the Heart of Stone Studio are petrified–Petrification is the process where the organic remains of fossil animals and plants are slowly replaced with minerals–They are literally petrified, or turned to stone. So the terms “fossilized” and “petrified” can be used pretty interchangeably.

The Fossilized Wood that leads this page is especially stunning–creamy caramels and russet browns pop against a background of shiny black. Some of these have quartz “windows” allowing a view inside the stone, while others have lighter color combinations. All have polished backs.

The colors shift in our Colla Wood, which  boasts rich blues, aquas, and greens. These unusual fossil colors arose when fractures in the ancient tree became filled with real Azurite, Malachite and Chrysocolla. So it’s not only these gemmy minerals that make this stone more valuable, it’s also that it is very rare. It was only discovered in 2012, and in only one location in Turkey.
